LOCK JAW
version 1.0
a PCBoard 14 door
by Norman Meadows
Copyright(1991) by Namida Software
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
****************
Lock Jaw was written in Turbo Pascal 5.5 using Sam Smith's Prokit
version 3.1. Thank you, Sam Smith for an excellent SourceWare package
that turns the drudgery of writing doors into a likeable experience.
Many thanks go out to Tom Hammond (SysOp of Widow Maker BBS) for
his ANSI support and bug testing. His tireless efforts and constant
availability have helped tremendously in the creation of this door.
WARRANTEES AND GUARANTEES
-------------------------
None, absolutely none. None implied, none expressed. None, period.
This software is offered "as-is" with no guarantees of compatability
with your system hardware or software.
This door has been run harmlessly and successfully on quite a few
BBS's and has caused no damage. It's an excellent door of an
addictive and competetive nature and is not expected to cause any
damage to your life or possessions in any way whatsoever. The boards
that have run this door in the past have had no such problems. I
don't expect you will either.
DESCRIPTION
***********
Sysop Stuff
-----------
Lock Jaw is capable of handling up to 100 players and runs on single
node only. Look to future releases of this program for a multi-node
version. That all depends on the kind of support received from this
release. By registering this copy you will receive all future
upgrades free of charge. This distribution copy of Lock Jaw is not
crippled in any way. It is a full working copy.
This door is for ANSI user's only. It is filled with ANSI
positioning commands and such. Even though the output is ANSI only,
users who are running from a monochrome monitor can use this door as
long as they have ANSI.SYS installed on thier system, and color mode
turned on from the BBS.
Playing the Game
----------------
The rules of Lock Jaw are displayed to the user in the opening
screen, so you don't have to worry about sharing the information in
this document with the users.
Lock Jaw is reminiscent of the old classic game of Master Mind but
with markable differences. The game is played using numbers on a
grid. When you play the game you will have the option of choosing a
series of from 3 to 6 digits. The higher the number you choose, the
higher the score you get if you guess the correct series of numbers.
You will have anywhere from 9 to 15 guesses to get the series and
sequence correct. If you get the series wrong after the last chance
you're given, you will be returned to the main menu and will have the
opportunity to play the game again. If you guess correctly, your
score will automatically be written to the high score bulletin (that
way if your game is interrupted for some reason, you haven't lost your
track record).
You can see your current standing from the menu using the 'H'
command (just think "High Scores"). It is updated after every hand of
play. If you are not in the top ten, it will tell you what position
you hold.
If you exceed your time-limit on the board while in this door you
will be warned. Your scores will all remain intact (again). If you
drop carrier (heaven forbid!) the door will return to the BBS which
in-turn should log you off.
For a description of how the scores are figured use the menu's 'S'
command. It gives a full and uncomplicated description.
Again, the above information is all available to the users within
the door.
INSTALLING LOCK JAW
*******************
FILES INCLUDED WITH THIS PACKAGE
--------------------------------
LOCKJAW.PLY - The player record file
LOCKJAW.CFG - The configuration file (as described below)
LOCKJAW.DTE - The date record file
LOCKJAW.DOC - This file
LJRESET.EXE - Run this to RESET the game to NO players and NO scores
LOCKJAW.EXE - The door program
Create a sub-directory for all this stuff and put all these files in
it.
THE LOCKJAW.CFG FILE
--------------------
If you're at all familiar with setting up doors, then this should be
a breeze. The following is my LOCKJAW.CFG file. Yours should be VERY
similar:
----------------------------------> INTERRUPT
| --------------------------------> Fountain Head BBS
| | ------------------------------> Norman Meadows
| | | ----------------------------> D:\BBS\DOORS\LOCKJAW\HISCORES.BUL
| | | | --------------------------> 20
| | | | | ------------------------> 0
| | | | | | ----------------------> Zippety Do Dah
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | -> It doesn't matter what you put on this line, as long as
| | | | | | you put something. For registered versions only.
| | | | | |
| | | | | ----> This is where the registered password goes. Put a 0
| | | | | here until you register the door.
| | | | |
| | | | -----> The number of turns to allow a player per day.
| | | |
| | | -------> The path and filename you want the high score
| | | bulletin to be written to.
| | |
| | ---------> The Sysop's name (that's you!).
| |
| -----------> Your BBS name as you want it to appear.
|
-------------> as is. Put the word "INTERRUPT".
Once you've created the .cfg file put it in the same sub-directory
as your LOCKJAW.EXE file. I keep mine in my \BBS\DOORS\LOCKJAW
sub-directory.
THE BATCH FILE
--------------
Once you've done all of the above you'll need to create a .bat file
to call the door. It's format should be as follows:
echo off
cd\bbs\doors\lockjaw
lockjaw lockjaw.cfg d:\bbs
cd\bbs
board
Line 1: Echo off if you want it off. It doesn't really matter, now
does it?
Line 2: Change directory to where you've put your LOCKJAW.EXE,
LJRESET, .CFG, .DTE and .PLY files.
Line 3: First put the word LOCKJAW, then the name of the .cfg file as
you created it with the instructions layed out earlier in this
document. I call mine LOCKJAW.CFG. Then put the path to your
main BBS directory. These three things should all be
separated by a space, of course.
Line 4: Change back to your main BBS directory when the program's
finished running.
Line 5: Tells it to run the board when everything's finished.
For Zylem BBS's your DOOR??.BAT file will look something like this:
echo off
pcb14dcp
cd\bbs\doors\lockjaw
lockjaw lockjaw.cfg d:\bbs
cd\bbs
board
RESETTING THE GAME
------------------
To reset Lock Jaw, simply CD to the directory Lockjaw is running
from and type:
LJRESET
Please use this program to reset the game rather than trying to edit
the .ply file. Manually editing the .ply file can (and probably will)
cause errors to crop up. If, for some surreal reason, you have
manually edited the Lockjaw.ply file, it can be fixed with LJReset.
This file will overwrite your current Lockjaw.ply file. There are no
prompts, so once you hit the return key you can consider it done.
If you happen to run this program outside of your Lock Jaw
sub-directory it will cause no harm except to files named Lockjaw.ply.
REGISTRATION
------------
This program HAS NOT been released into the public domain. Even
though the door is fully capable as-is, if you intend to use this door
after a reasonable amount of testing (two weeks to a month) you are
required by law to register this door with it's author. This program
has the capability to show appreciation to the person who contributes
the money to register it. Upon registration, the program will
display, for all to see, the name of the registerer along with an
appreciative note for all to see. You've probably seen the
"adopt-a-door" schemes going around. This is the same thing and it
gives your contributing users a nice warm fuzzy by displaying their
name as a valued user.
To register this door, please print out the following page and send
it, a self-addressed-stamped envelope and $10 in cash, check or money
order to:
